Education & Training Boards work in partnership to meet challenge of 2030 energy saving target

ETB Sector has 100% engagement in Energy Training programme

Education & Training Boards (ETBs) are working in partnership with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) and the Department of Education to meet the challenging public sector requirement to reduce emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and to net-zero by 2050*.

Chairing today’s Education and Training Boards session at the SEAI Public Sector Energy Conference, Paddy Lavelle, General Secretary of Education & Training Boards Ireland added “I am happy to say that 100% of ETBs are engaged in the SEAI Energy MAP training programme, a figure unique in the Education Sector. This has enabled them to identify and implement important energy-saving opportunities in their ETBs”.

“Education & Training Boards have shown leadership” he continued, “whether that’s Limerick and Clare ETB supporting the energy retrofitting of thirty-nine schools to date as part of the Department of Education’s Pathfinder project, City of Dublin and Longford & Westmeath’s energy-reducing metering projects or Cavan & Monaghan’s Energy Awareness Action Plan. That leadership, from caretaker to chief executive, will be essential if we are to develop successful strategies to pursue energy efficiency and the associated emissions reductions targets set out for the public sector in the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021”.

“Each ETB’s commitment to Energy Training also impacts at school level”, the General Secretary pointed out “and aligns with student learning as part of ETBI’s Take 1 Programme – Embedding the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) in Teaching and Learning. The interconnected nature of the Global Goals is demonstrated through ETB engagement with the SEAI Energy MAP training, which highlights a practical commitment to addressing students’ Climate Concerns while also achieving 2030 targets through energy management activities”.

Speaking in advance of the Public Sector Energy Conference, William Walsh, CEO of SEAI said: “SEAI is delighted to host the dedicated ETB session at this year’s conference, which is chaired by ETBI General Secretary Paddy Lavelle. ETB engagement in the Energy MAP programme and the ETB projects outlined during the session, developed in partnership with SEAI, show the leadership and commitment of the ETB Sector to planning decarbonisation and strategies to meet the challenging dual targets for 2030”.

Concluding, Paddy Lavelle stated: “From capital projects to retrofit, real time energy monitoring to the behavioural changes required of all of us, these projects involve ETBs working together and in partnership with others to continually improve our delivery of core services”.
