What is the iVET module?

The Initial Vocational Education and Training or iVET module is an optional Transition Year module developed collaboratively by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment (NCCA), Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI), and SOLAS (Further Education and Training Authority) to strengthen links between schools and Further Education and Training (FET).

The iVET module aims to introduce students to vocational education and training (VET) through hands-on experiences and FET Pathway courses offered by Education and Training Boards.

What are the benefits in offering the iVET module to Transition Year students?

The iVET module helps students discover interests and aptitudes in vocational fields, supporting informed decisions about future pathways beyond senior cycle. Through their engagement, students get the opportunity to build technical competencies linked to the relevant FET Pathway Course and also the key competencies of senior cycle. The iVET module bridges classroom learning with authentic vocational experiences, fostering lifelong learning and employability.

Why it matters

The iVET module supports Ireland’s strategy to increase permeability between general education and vocational pathways, promoting diverse career options and addressing skills gaps in sectors like construction, healthcare, and technology.

How learning is achieved

Each FET Pathway Course differs in design, so there is no single prescribed method as to how the learning of the iVET module is to be achieved. Many of aims of the iVET module can be achieved through the learning outcomes of the FET taster course. Where there are aims are not covered by the FET Pathway Course, schools should design additional tasks (e.g., reflection journals, projects) to meet those aims.
