Middle leaders from across the Education and Training Board (ETB) sector came together at the University of Galway for this year’s ETBI Summer School ‘Supporting Leadership in a Changing World’ for learning, reflection, networking and collaboration.
During the Summer School, AP1/AP2 and middle leaders were provided with an opportunity to develop a deeper understanding of what effective leadership looks like in an ever-changing educational landscape.
Best practices
ETBI Summer School offered participants the chance to step away from the demands of school life and fully immerse themselves in a collaborative learning environment, where they built meaningful connections, shared ideas with their peers and explored best practices.
Delegates experienced an informal setting which gave them a sense of security to freely participate in discussion.
The programme was delivered through a variety of engaging formats, including group discussions, breakout sessions and interactive workshops.
Guest speakers
Contributions from guest speakers, brought a wide range of perspectives helping connect theory and practice and supporting ongoing professional development.
Dr Brian Mac Giolla Phádraig, Assistant Chief Inspector from the Department of Education and Youth delivered a session on promoting inclusive teaching, learning and assessment practices. He shared ideas on how teachers can support every student in the classroom, creating a more inclusive learning environment.
Helen Walsh, Head of Inclusion & Education Support Services and John Kearny, CEO of NCSE addressed special education development in Ireland. This included an overview of the increase in special education classes and schools, and how these supports are being expanded to meet the needs of students.
As middle leaders face an ever-changing landscape, it is important for them to understand these developments to practice in their schools and improve outcomes for students. This focus on informed learning was evident throughout the programme.
