Statement by Michael Moriarty, General Secretary of Education and Training Boards Ireland (ETBI)
Whilst the effect in our sector is not widespread today in terms of schools being closed to accept students, a small number of schools are nonetheless affected today arising from the withdrawal by the ASTI from supervision and substitution duties.
However, a higher number of schools will be directly affected in our sector tomorrow with the impending second day of strike action by the ASTI.
The talks which continued at national level through the weekend regrettably failed to avert the action planned for today and tomorrow, with the potential that the ASTI’s action will create further challenges for school management in seeking to open schools for students as the week continues.
ETBI is concerned about the effect that an ongoing campaign of industrial action will have on students in particular. but also on parents, teachers and management, not merely in our sector, but across the education sector at post-primary level. Continuing dialogue is necessary to seek to facilitate a timely resolution.
