Minister’s €35 million prefab initiative welcomed by IVEA
Minister Ruairi Quinn’s €35 million initiative to replace rented prefabs with permanent classrooms in over 200 schools has been welcomed by the Irish Vocational Education Association (IVEA).
IVEA General Secretary, Michael Moriarty says: ‘This initiative is welcome because it will provide schools with permanent and appropriate facilities in which to educate young people. IVEA is aware that replacing prefabs was a priority of Minister Quinn’s long before his ascent to office, and we commend him for this. It will clearly save money; indeed, it is difficult to understand how we went on wasting money on the rental of unsuitable accommodation for so long.
‘Mr Moriarty continues: ‘Equally, it will provide much needed work for those who might otherwise have no option but the immigrant ship. Indeed, there is a good case for extending this project to bring forward the refurbishment of many older school buildings around the country. Investing in this kind of work now will result in savings later on. It will also ensure that young people learn in more suitable surroundings – thus building morale in our schools where the morale is at a low ebb because of cuts to the education budget.’
